Tips for Building Muscle

The best way to attain the goal of toning up and being more healthy is to have a training plan consisting of regular cardio and high repetition, low weight resistance training.  But the following muscle building tips will help you if your goal is to increase muscle mass

1.  To increase muscle execute high quality sets with heavy weights.  Because you are taxing your muscles to their maximun capability, your rest between sets should be one to three minutes.

2.  Warm up should consist of the same exercises you intend to do in your workout, but with lower weight and fewer reps.  Do not do any more than 5-6 reps.  If you perform more than this, you will build up lactic acid or possibly get fatigued.   Warm up does not mean stretch – stretching doesn’t prevent injury.  If you have a muscle you plan to work on and it is particularly tight, you can stretch to loosen that muscle – but stretches are otherwise not required.

3.  Don’t overanalyze each move you make.  Go to the gym, do the workout as best you can and get stronger.  After that, go home and don’t think about what you may or may not have done wrong.  Stress keeps you from performing at your best.

4.  Both sides of a joint should be worked the same during the week.  So during your training week if you perform two sets of biceps exercises, also do two sets of triceps exercises.  Do this for each set of muscles around a given joint.

5.  The last and most important tip is that you tell yourself that your goal is building muscle and then choose to meet that goal no matter what it takes.  If you don’t have time during the day for a workout, then wake up extra early every day to fit the workout into your day.  Decide that you will commit to two to three hours out of your week to set aside for the hard work it takes to completely change your body.
